PICK ME! Get that job

How to get picked for that job, position, project or team.

The Big Secret: Be seen as the best available solution!

What do you have to do?

1. Commit

2. Research and learn

3. Make the presentation

Commit: Make a promise to yourself that you are going to get this because you: 1. Know that it is in your DNA, you were born to it, nothing will quieten your true voice. You love it!

2. Know you can do it really well and that there is a world expert emerging from inside you.

3. Know the world needs it, and that by doing it you will make things better.

Research and Learn: Read, study, and learn as much about it as you can prior to presenting your solution, you. You are the solution. Devour information, access everything you can. Your aim is to know more about this than the people you are presenting to.

Your Task List: Read the companies annual report. Learn the main issues from the Chairman and CEO reviews. Understand and learn the numbers. Visit the Web site. Understand the values. Read all of the press releases. Get hold of as many news letters as you can. Search the company and its people. Consume all of the search results. Connect with the companies people on LinkedIn. Call people at the company, talk with them and ask to meet with them to learn more about the company. See what you can find that has been published about company history. Research and understand who the competitors are. Learn all about the competitors. Read about the customers. Talk with and meet the customers and learn what you can from their perspective. Call and meet with the companies suppliers, learn from them. Access and research industry information sources. Industry associations and publications. Industry trends and predicted changes. Technology advances in the industry. Obtain information from government bodies concerning market and industry data. Understand what the issues are around government regulation, research these to understand what is changing and has changed.

By now you are beginning to look, sound and feel like an expert on this company, position, project or team. Thats good not bad. When you feel like this, it’s time to do more work not less. Keep going you are not there yet. Go back to your early learnings and revise, test yourself. Make an examination paper, pop quiz about the company and test yourself. Go to WIX and start building a free Web site about the company drawing only on the information that is now in your head. Be a customer of the company and experience the service real time, learn from this, do it repeatedly. When you know so much that it feels like there is nothing left to do, go and find more to learn. You’re not done yet. When you have learned that little bit more, and only then, go and learn more.

Learning about this company, its problems and how you will help solve them is something you will never stop learning about, even after you have started your dream job. And you will start, trust me!

Presentation: Cover a wall with butchers paper and mind map everything you have learned. Make a 20 or so slide presentation about how you are the solution and what the solution is. Write a 3,000 word white paper on your solution manifesto. Get someone to interview you and video the interview. Watch it back together and critique it. Write down all the questions you would ask you if you were going to interview you. Think of the toughest questions you can. Write out the answers. Visit the web site you made with someone else and get them to ask you questions about the company. Get half a dozen people together, make your presentation and take questions.

Okay by about now you should be getting ready to present your solution at interview. Between now and the event: re-commit, re-research and go over your presentation every day. Try not to worry too much because I promise you this.

You are going to get picked!

Play hard go well!
