High performing teams are facilitated and led,
they are no accident.

Groups move through clearly defined stages as they develop into teams. They become aware of each others strengths, weaknesses and differences. They confront and resolve these differences. They build consensus and agreement about what is important and they begin to perform. The speed and fluidity with which teams move through these stages determines how quickly and sustainably they are able to perform at their optimum.

The more diverse the group the more creative it may become at problem solving and innovation. Diverse groups are also the most difficult to lead as the diversity often leads to conflict and difference of view and opinion. It is in the resolution of these differences that groups transition into cohesive results driven teams. Unresolved these differences often lead to quite negative and counterproductive situations.

Conflict resolution is a shared value in the high performing team.

Open and honest feedback and rigorous exchange are the communication hallmarks of the effective team. Role and goal clarity is of critical importance. Also paramount are clear norms around purpose, guidelines, resources, measures and consequences. High performing teams hold each other accountable and take responsibility for managing their own performance.
